A new chair for our living room

Hurray! We've ordered a new chair for our living room from EQ3 and it's such a beauty:
It's called the Reverie and I love it's mid century modern vibe. Because EQ3 allows you to customize their furniture, we ordered a gorgeous dark grey fabric called Klein Charcoal. Here's the swatch:
And we also chose different chair legs. We went with stainless steel, which looks like more of a frame than just legs. Here's what it looks like on a leather version of the chair:
I'm so excited for our chair to arrive. I will be sure to take a picture of it in our living room.

I am such a fan of EQ3 and am seriously thinking this Oskar sofa will be finding it's way into our living room (when we eventually move and we need another sofa because we'll actually have two living rooms, I hope!):
I'd want it in a light grey of course, because that's how I roll.

For now, I'm just so happy to have a comfy chair, that also has some serious style, on its way to my house! Thank you SO much for the amazing Christmas gift!

Living room: The next update

It's safe to say that I like change. My living room isn't too shabby, but I have plans for an update. It'll have to happen bit by bit, but that's okay. My light grey couch and dark grey and white armchairs aren't going anywhere...for now at least! So here's a look into the vision I have:
1. Micah Floor Lamp from EQ3 - This lamp has actually been ordered and is on its way to my house. Can't wait! Love the shade, the cool base, and the hit of black it will bring. I dig it in a big way.
2. Custom Coffee Table in Marble from EQ3 - Um, yes please. I have longed for a marble coffee table for some time. I wish I could say that this is also on its way to my house. Alas, it shall be mine one day!
3. Anchler Media Storage from EQ3 - Now this is a piece of furniture. For now, my old IKEA tv stand works just fine, but this beauty would be a welcome replacement. I really think rooms need wood like this to warm them up.

Moving on to the walls. Lately, I seem to have a serious obsession with looking for pretty things to hang on my walls. So here are a couple of very pretty things:
4. Expedition Mirror from DwellStudio - Yep, this is pretty gorgeous. I love a round mirror and I think the leather strap hanger is simple enough that it's not too over the top. Seems like a classic piece that won't go out of style. Or maybe it will go out of style before I can afford it!
5. Volcano, Iceland photograph by Bardoux Manuel from L'Affiche Moderne - This is actually a colour photogragh. Mind blown! I am mesmerized and just want to stare at it. I need to order this as soon as possible. And I think I should put a trip to Iceland on my travel list!

So there you have it. A glimpse into the future of my living room! And of course I have my eye on quite a few accessories that I think will fit with this vision. I really want to go in the direction of white, many shades of grey, black, and wood in pretty much every room of our house. Neutral is something I won't get tired of. At least for a while, right?

Christmas wish list

1. The Things That Matter by Nate Berkus (amazon.ca) - I've heard good things about this interior design book. But such a broody looking Nate on the cover!
2. Surya tobias black throw blanket (amazon.com) - This textured black throw would be pretty at the end of our bed. I've been on the search for one and they are surprisingly tricky to find.
3. Red birds print by Judy Kaufmann (etsy.com) - I've had my eye on this print for so long. It's perfect and would look fabulous in my kitchen...but where to put it?!?
4. Case study cylinder plant pot with stand (modernica.net) - I love this pot/stand combo. This would be so awesome in our living room.
5. MELLBY armchair in Dansbo dark gray (ikea.com) - I dig this chair and think it would be pretty sweet in our living room. We tried it out when we were at the Edmonton IKEA a couple weeks ago and it's comfy.
6. Woven felt basket in large (westelm.com) - I've had a bit of an obsession with felt baskets lately. I wanted one for my throw blankets in the living room but ended up settling for a gray plastic basket from HomeSense...it's okay, but settling doesn't equal loving.

1. Heart locket pendant (tiffany.ca) - I would love love love this large heart locket on a long chain (24 or 30 inches). I've never seen a locket so perfect...you can't even see the hinge. And it's Tiffany blue inside. Swoon!
2. Your name here silk bracelet (coattonline.com) - I just think these are cool. You can get your name spelled in morse code! Of course I would choose sterling silver and a black silk cord to match all of my other jewelry.
3. Cozy long fleece robe in spring orchid (victoriassecret.com) - I have a summery robe but not a big, warm one. I saw this at VS when we were at the West Ed Mall and it was heavenly.
4. Cotton mayfair pajama in pink/white stripe (victoriassecret.com) - So classic pajama-y. I have other pj's from VS that are awesome so my guess is these would be also.
5. Single legacy tassel key ring (coach.com) - Ideally, I'd like one from Hermes, but since they're a cool $260 I'd be happy with one of these for $38.
6. Sherpa-lined sweater boots in coconut milk (oldnavy.gapcanada.ca) - Oh, I love a good slipper boot! My feet are pretty much always cold and these are ever so cozy.

Now that's what I call a WISH list!

Needlepoint progress

Okay, I first posted about my needlepoint project about 5 months ago and I'm not finished yet. Yikes. Time flies and I clearly do not work on my little needlepoint hobby every day. Anyways, it is getting there so I thought I'd share an update. Take a look:
What do you think? (By the way, ignore the fact that the line on the bottom looks a bit wonky...that's just how it's sitting on the scroll frame.) As you can see, I don't have much further to go really. I need to work on it every time I watch t.v. so I can move to the sewing it into a pillow part. Ack, that part scares me a bit. I have the grey velvet for the back and the inner cushion. What I need is more practice sewing so I don't mess it up! I want to use a zipper to make the cover removable from the inner cushion but zippers are not easy to sew...for me anyways. We'll see when I get there...which is hopefully in less than another 5 months! The white chair in the living room eagerly awaits its lumbar support companion!

Terrarium (and vases!)

We recently went into a flower shop and bought a cute little terrarium and an air plant. An air plant! I think it's pretty neat. Take a look:
It doesn't need soil and all you have to do is give it a little water every week or two by misting it or plopping it in a cup of water for a while. My plan is to put it in a cup of water for half an hour once a week...and if I forget one week, it will stay in the cup for an hour the next week! It'll be a good reminder to actually water all of my plants. They do well despite being somewhat neglected. A little wilting tells me it is time to water! Oops.
Cubebot has made friends with the new addition:
Cubie (as I've taken to calling him lately) looks awfully stoked to be hanging out with...Airie...Airhead...Mr. Air? Hmmm, my other plants are nameless so I'm not sure any of these will stick.
I've failed to show you a pic of my pretty vases that hang out at the other end of the tv bench/credenza:
I got them quite a while ago with money from our garage sale in the spring. They're from Jonathan Adler and I love them. They're pottery (if you can't tell or have never heard of JA) so they have such a nice weight to them and are such great quality. I really want one more (the lantern gourd vase) that is smaller but in the same series. One day it shall be mine, I hope! Also, a special shout out to Ray for picking my vases up for me...thanks again!

A bunch of stuff

So I have a few things to show you since I've been too lazy to take pictures...again. Today we got some new sofa legs in the mail that we ordered from Uncle Bob's Workshop. I like them much more than the clunky ones that came with the Karlstad. I think these sofa legs are a little sleeker and sexier:
Here's a closer view:
They're oak with a medium brown stain. It's a bit darker than the other oak in the room but that's probably a good thing...don't want to get too matchy matchy!

We were away this weekend and I picked up a new pillow for our bed...at
Bowring, of all places:
It's black felt and I like the texture of it. I like the drastic contrast of black on our white bedding. I haven't shown you the white bedding yet, so here's a look:
I bought it at Homesense when I was shopping with my Grandma a while ago. I think it's an awfully pretty duvet cover. I can't decide whether to lose the shams or not. When I bought the new black pillow, I was thinking I would just use that alone but now I think maybe the white pillows add a little something. Who knows? We are terrible at making the bed so most days it'll likely just be a messy duvet on the bed with pillows strewn on the floor.

I also need to show you my cute kitchen owl timer that a beautiful friend sent my way forever ago:

It sits by my stove...waiting for me to cook something! As do the utensils. It's adorable...Thanks NJM!

And lastly, take a look at the plants growing in my dining room:

They're pumpkin plants!!! The tiny things in the background are flowers...which may or may not make it! We'll see how this new adventure shapes up!

Our record player and stand

We got a record player! Actually, we got the record player a couple weeks ago but I finally got around to taking a picture tonight. We ordered it from Amazon and it's just awesome! We bought an antique stand to put it on and it's sitting cozily in the corner of the living room:

We absolutely love both the record player and the stand. We got the antique stand from a store here in the city. The owner told us he bought it at an estate sale and it belonged to a man that had a lot of really nice stuff and he spent $20,000 at the sale. Wowsa! The owner told us it's a parlour table (which is such a great name!) made of 'tiger' oak and he figured it was made between the 1900's to 1930's. I like having something old like this in a room full of really new stuff.

Anyways, here's a pic that shows the side of the record player where the speakers are. They actually sound really good and the volume goes quite loud so we don't need external speakers. Also check out the cool curve on the side of the table (I love that part!):

Here's a close up of the top of the record player so you can see the controls:

Pretty easy to use! It can also be connected to a computer with a USB so you can rip records if you want. We haven't tried it and probably won't really do that much but it's still cool.

And here's our massive record collection:

We had two records when the record player arrived so we visited two record stores in the city and came home with a bunch of new and used ones. Here's what we have so far:

The Beatles: Abbey Road
Creedence Clearwater Revival: Chronicle
Nirvana: Nevermind
Nirvana: In Utero
The Cars: Greatest Hits
Foo Fighters: Wasting Light
The Everly Brothers: Looking Back
The Guess Who: 20 Original Hits
Adele: 21
Superman The Movie: Original Soundtrack
Superman 2: Original Soundtrack
Superman 3: Original Soundtrack
The Doobie Brothers: Best of the Doobies
Bob and Doug McKenzie: Great White North
Elvis: 20 Hits
The Steve Miller Band: Greatest Hits 1974-78
Guns n' Roses: Appetite for Destruction

Oh yeah! Quite the mix we have going. Can you guess which ones Dave picked out and which ones I picked out? I can't wait to get more records to fill up the shelf!

Yay for tulips

I sure like having fresh flowers in my house. It doesn't happen very often but I like to buy a cheap little bunch when I go grocery shopping. Tulips have been the flower of choice the last couple times. Tulips = Spring! Dave picked up these peachy-red beauties for me:

The colours are ever so pretty:

I think Mr. Roboto likes them too. He's the wooden cube! He's been a cube for a while...I suppose he got a little tired from his recent body builder pose!

My new hobby: Needlepoint!

Friends, I am a needlepointer. I've never done it before...so why wouldn't I take on a pillow as a first project? It's going surprisingly well...at least I think it is. If you're an expert needlepointer, you may need to look away.

I was inspired by Jonathan Adler, who sells fantastic (and pricey!) needlepoint pillows. You really should check them out. The Bargello ones are amazing. Anyways, I decided to try my hand at it. Dave got me a couple of really old and really awesome needlepoint books from a used book store (THE used book/comic store that he frequents regularly!) and I found another good one at the library. Then I visited a knitting shop and bought some canvas, tapestry wool, a needle, and a needle threader and I was in business. My friend Alissa lent me a scroll frame, which is awesome. You ready for this?:

I'm making a rectangular pillow with what is called a byzantine stitch. I dig zigzag. I am doing 3 shades of grey (which you can see in the pic) and will keep repeating them in that pattern of dark, medium, and light. The canvas is wrapped around the scroll frame so you can't see the top but there's a few more inches. I drew the size of the rectangle that I wanted with a pen (actually Dave did because I was a chicken!). And if you're wondering, the green strip is just painter's tape so the cut edge of the canvas doesn't unravel. The book actually said to use masking tape but I couldn't find any!

Here's a closer shot:

And closer:

Hey, why not even closer?:

You may have seen that I started drawing out the step pattern with pencil which makes it so easy to follow. I just draw out 11 holes up and 11 holes over repeatedly. The only tricky thing is starting out at the bottom to make sure you have the pattern right. But once I finally figure it out (after a lot of staring and perhaps some tense words), it goes pretty quickly.

There you have it. My needlepoint which will soon be an awesome pillow for my white chair. I'm thinking of backing the pillow with grey velvet. Oh yeah!

We have a couch

I've been too busy to show you but we actually have a functioning living room again. The couch cover from IKEA arrived last Wednesday...2 months after we placed our order online. Ack! What an ordeal. We got the actual couch in a pretty timely manner but it took 40 days after the couch was delivered for the cover to get here. Without a cover, you can't exactly use the couch (you don't build it until you put the cover on the individual pieces).

Perhaps this is reasonable to some but we have chalked it up as a frustrating experience and there's a very slim chance that we'll be ordering online through the IKEA website again. Even their customer service rep said it's a better idea to order directly from your most local store. That would have been good to know. We usually drive 5 hours, load up the car, drive another 5 hours back and are as happy as peaches. However, my car doesn't fit a couch. Next time (if Dave allows it...he was not a happy camper I tell you!), we will have to place our delivery order at our 'local' store.

So even though our ordering experience was less than ideal, I really do love my new couch:

It's the Karlstad with the Isunda gray cover which I have dreamed about, talked about, longed for, waited for, etc. for a very long time. It's very comfortable, I love the fabric (colour and texture), and I really am happy to finally be sitting on it!

I will have to get different legs for it as I'm not a fan of the ones it comes with. And since we are playing what's wrong with the stuff in the picture above:
1) Take a look at this rug on rug situation. Not good, I know.
2) Check out the brown too-short curtains (which are gone now and replaced with beauties I will show you later...promise)
3) Beige paint with a grey couch? Not a big fan I tell you.
4) You can't have one pillow...maybe you can, but I can't. This will not last.

Oh, and one other thing that is just plain right...that sweet looking art. It's a moviebarcode print that we ordered (I posted about this cool art back in April). We got it framed at Michael's and we're digging it in a big way. What movie is it? An epic masterpiece from 1978 of course. Okay, it's Superman. I love my husband. And the colours.

I'll post more pics of the living room another time. It's still a work in progress but we're getting there!

Cool record players

I saw this cool record player in Anthology's Winter Gift Guide (a digital mag) and I sure do like it:

I've honestly never seen anything like this. It's small, simple, and very cool looking.

This one is very different, but also quite awesome:

Grey and navy...aren't those the same colours in my living room? Hmmm.

We got a Cubebot

Remember when I posted about how fun it would be to have a Cubebot? Well, thanks to Indigo we have one that is certainly upping the fun factor in our living room:

This is his "Hi, I'm awesome" pose...or as Dave thinks, it's the "I'm tough" pose. Either way, our little Mr. Roboto is fun to play with. I have yet to master how to fold him up into a cube but I will one day...maybe.

For now, Mr. Roboto is hanging out on the end table. And if you're incredibly observant, you may have noticed a new lamp behind Mr. Roboto. Woohoo, we got a new lamp on Saturday! It adds some much needed light to the living room.

We are still living in slight chaos in our living room as we are still without our sofa cover and the chair we ordered from IKEA. Ack! IKEA is very lucky that I love them very much. So once that all comes in and everything else comes together, I will be excited to show you some pics...hopefully sooner than later!

Almost here

We ordered our new couch and chair from IKEA. And on Friday, we got some of the boxes but not all. So in our living room sits the pieces of a couch that can't yet be assembled. As I wait ever so patiently, I will show you what I will soon have in my living room:

1. TULLSTA in ransta dark gray
2. IKEA STOCKHOLM easy chair in rostanga white
3. KARLSTAD in isunda gray

I already have and love the white IKEA STOCKHOLM and hopefully very soon the rest will be here. I have longed for a KARLSTAD for so long. Why I didn't buy this couch for my (I mean our) living room in the first place is beyond me. Honestly, it was the fact that I could not fit it in the car. Shipping? What? Every time I would go to IKEA, I sat on the KARLSTAD floor models and told Dave repeatedly how much I wanted one. More accurately, how much I needed the grey one. And now I have the pieces (sans cover) which will soon look like the pretty pic above. And then in a couple years, we will get the darker grey cover which Dave likes better (The light grey "looks like an old man's suit"). Marriage is all about compromise, right? Somehow, I win...and I win. Thank you Dave!

Mirror for my living room

I'm thinking of ordering this mirror I found online:

I really like the starburst/sunburst style. This one isn't very expensive and really there's not much to it....just some silver metal spikes, shiny silver discs, and a small mirror in the middle. It's 24 inches in diameter which should be a decent size to hang over an armchair. It's pretty light looking (as opposed to looking really heavy like some big mirrors do).

I definitely want something round. Another possibility was this one:

However, this one is too small (20 inches) for the space and maybe too bathroom-y. Any thoughts/ideas?

Zigzags...and circles

We got the lamp I wanted for the living room and I also impulse purchased some sweet zigzag patterned pillows at Pier 1 Imports:

The pillows have a sweet retro feel...the yarn stitching is super soft and the back is a velvety fabric in the dark teal colour. I like the bright lime and turquoise colours and how punchy they look with the dark brown leather couch. Even though this couch is heading to the basement someday soon, it still deserves fantastic pillows! I actually look forward to decorating the basement living room one day with these pillows as my jumping off point.

And then there's our new lamp! We are really liking it but will be even happier when we get the bright white drum shade we had to order for it. I'm very disappointed that Pier 1's website says it has a "clean white shade" because it isn't even close to white. It couldn't even pass for ivory! It's essentially tan with a darker shade of tan on the inside. It really blends in with the paint. Blech! So we've ordered a white shade that is pretty much the same size (16" x 12"). We got the lamp on sale so that sort of makes up having to buy a white lamp shade. Sort of! But it's going to look pretty darn snappy once everything else in the room comes together.

More Swedish design

Since I love all things Swedish, I love looking at sites all about Swedish design. The site From Sthlm is a fabulous online shop that features different Swedish designers each month (I posted about it once before here). I love seeing who and what they are featuring. This month they're featuring Camp Cirrus. I was so impressed that I also searched for their site to see more of their line and wowsa, I would take one of everything please. They have throws, pillow covers, trays, textile jars, and bags all in fantastic patterns.

Here's a couple of pics from the From Sthlm site of things that I think would look amazing in my house. I have a bit of a thing for trays (and I love red and I love polka dots!) so I could easily see this RUND tray in my kitchen:

And because I love grey and pretty pillows, this BLAD knit pillow cover would look fantastic in my living room (especially once I get my grey couch...soon friends, soon!):

Gorgeous. Camp Cirrus has been added to my bookmarks!

Coffee table

I took some pictures of our new coffee table today. I finally thought of it while there was still daylight so you can see all the bright and glossy goodness! We bought it at EQ3 in Winnipeg and it's called the MOSCO storage occasional table (sorry, I call them coffee tables). Here's a pic:

This pic is sort of an odd angle but I wanted to show you how the table is solid in the front and back and open on the sides. My laptop fits in the side shelf so nicely! Dave will likely use the other side for comics/graphic novels/the current book he is reading.

Here's the view from the couch:

There's a drawer for storing more stuff! We have the tv/cable remote in there as well as PS3 controllers and other stuff. I love having this kind of stuff hidden away but easily accessible. This would have been tricky with my original plan for a marble coffee table.

So it's pretty bright and glossy, right? I'm loving the white colour. It really brightens up the living room. And the chrome legs that form rectangles on either side are quite fantastic and really tie in nicely with my chrome/glass end tables. Matchy but not too matchy-matchy.

Now to ditch the dark chocolate brown leather couch and chair (to the basement) and get my light grey couch and charcoal grey chair. I'm being patient because I know I can't have everything all at once but I seriously can't wait to place my IKEA order!

I also want to show you the white lacquer/wood tray I bought at Indigo. My intention was to put it on the coffee table but I feel it takes up too much valuable foot room (I can't not put my feet up!). So for now, it has found a home on one of the end tables:

See, I do have some things that are not from IKEA (but yes, the plant pot, silver candle holder and coasters are from there)!

Winnipeg shopping and IKEA

I did a bit of shopping during my recent trip to Winnipeg and wanted to tell you about the shops I checked out while I was there. Amy, of the blog aDESIGNdock, gave me some tips on stores to check out.

First of all, my friends, I have been on the hunt for a new coffee table. And not just any coffee table - I was thinking white Carrara marble top with chrome legs. What I've discovered is that these are not easy to find. And I wanted it to be very white with only slight grey veining, very much like this beauty from STYLEGARAGE:

It's official, I am quite picky. Besides wanting perfection in nature, I discovered that these certainly do not come cheap and are not everywhere, that's for sure. I thought I'd search in Winnipeg and I did buy a coffee table while there, but it didn't end up being marble!

First up, I visited the shop 'These Four Walls', one of Amy's recommendations. Oh my, it was full of beautiful things. It reminded me very much of one of my favourite stores in Saskatoon called 'Sew & Home'. Lots of big-ticket furniture items and some very nice accessories to boot. A few marble/stone beauties but not exactly what I wanted. I almost bought a clock from there but all they had left was the store model (no thanks to imperfections). A really lovely store I would certainly visit again!

Dave's cousin told me about 'In Decor' which was only a block or so from 'Interior Touches', which was another of Amy's recommendations. Dave's cousin had been in 'In Decor' before and knew they carried Umbra products (which I tend to like) so thought it would be worth a stop. I took a pic of the storefront:

It is a very nice shop full of home accessories. They have a few chairs and bigger items as well. I fell for a lamp and the lovely staff let me take a pic (which is on Dave's phone and he is currently playing ball!) and measured it for me. Unfortunately, it was a table lamp and I'm feeling the space needs a floor lamp, so it wasn't meant to be. I will be back to that little shop soon for another browse though!

Next up, I checked out 'Interior Touches':

This store is mainly big items that have big pricetags, but I fell for a little white marble end table that had a white base. Very sweet and perhaps would have filled my sudden need for marble but it wasn't exactly what I wanted. This place offers design consultations as well, which sounded really quite reasonable. I saw a few other really nice items like a red fabric bench with steel legs, a giant red glossy planter, and a huge mirror (which I would like in a substantially smaller scale!).

We also impulsively stopped at 'EQ3', which is right by Polo Park Mall, and that is where we bought a coffee table! It's not marble but glossy white...and it has shiny chrome legs (it's called the MOSCO storage cocktail table). We spotted it and thought it would be perfect. We sat on the couch, tested out our feet on it (yep, we are feet-on-the-coffee-table people), and had a quick discussion about the functionality of having a drawer and a place to shove the laptop and assorted books, etc. We were in and out in 20 minutes and hooray, we have a new coffee table (well, we will once we pick it up in a couple weeks).

I'm really happy with our choice and excited to get it. I think we need storage and you can't really get that with marble (that I'm aware of). I promise to show you a pic of our glossy, shiny new table once it comes home! And I'll keep you posted on my visits to more Winnipeg shops (so many left to still see!).

p.s. The IKEA catalogue is out today!!!!!!!!!!! Yippee!!!!!!!!!!! Also, we drove past the future location of the IKEA store in Winnipeg and I must say I was pretty excited just to see the sign stuck in the dirt!

A place to find nice art

Dave and I are planning to buy some new art prints for the living room and dining room sometime soon. We've got two of them picked out from the site RedBubble. Have you heard of it? They sell images in wall art and t-shirts too and the prices are really reasonable.

This isn't what we're getting but I think it's downright pretty:

I will be ordering the living room prints soon but you'll have to wait for the reveal! They're not flower prints, which Dave is happy about I think! I love flowers but it's time to change things up.

I'm also planning a giant gallery wall of frames (11 of them!) in the dining room. The frames are waiting patiently to be filled with art and hung on the wall. All I know is that there's going to be some serious colour added to the kitchen/dining room and I'm pretty excited for that!

A very productive weekend

Can you actually believe this?:

We hung up the white frames in my office/the spare bedroom! They're above my little white desk. I don't have them all filled yet but today we decided to get them up on the wall and I'll worry about that later. Isn't my husband epic at hanging up picture frames? We used those handy little velcro picture hangers that we also used for the frames in our bedroom. I helped with the measuring tape and that was pretty much it. I'm very happy to finally get this project done (well, almost done!). It was February when I asked you for advice on how to hang them (I actually strayed a bit from my original layouts...sorry little round frame)!

Today I also hemmed (with that super iron-on hemming stuff) my new curtains for my office. I got them at IKEA a couple weeks ago. They're the HEDDA BLAD and I think they're pretty cute. Seriously, $19.99 is ridiculously cheap for a set of curtains! Here's a close-up pic:

I've got a few more projects to finish up and then I'll give you a tour of the whole room.

Dave also got the tv hung up on the wall in the living room (I guess he did that on Thursday night...our project this weekend was watching tv!). Here's a pic of all the hardware he had to install:

He had to cut some pretty big holes in the wall for the two plates that direct the cables. Scary stuff! But he did a great job and we're very happy having the tv mounted on the wall above our new tv bench. Our living room is still in a bit of a state and I haven't finished redecorating so you will have to wait for some 'after' pics down the road.

I really really really love weekends!
